AnnotationThe Better Government for Older People (BGOP) programme aims "to improve public services for older people by better meeting their needs, listening to their views and encouraging and recognising their contribution". This paper draws on the evaluation of a subset of BGOP pilots that received funding from the Home Office Older Volunteers Initiative OVI) to promote active ageing through volunteering. It starts with an overview of the current debates on active communities and active ageing, and a description of OVI. The evaluation findings consider aspects of participation (or non-participation) in OVI; the influence of OVI on the lives of people in the community; and funding and sustainability of OVI pilots. Implications of the findings for the government's agenda on active ageing are discussed. (RH).
