Annotation | Opportunity Age was published in 2005 with the aim to end the perception of older people as dependent, ensure that longer life is healthy and fulfilling, and ensure that older people are full participants in society. Thirty-three indicators gathered from UK official sources were used to monitor older people's well-being and independence, with the aim of measuring improvements in overall quality of life. This 2008 update provides an overall summary of the results, shows where there is progress and where more needs to be done, and discusses the latest data and trends over time where possible. Discussions cover the five domains identified in the 2005 report: Independence in Supportive Communities; Healthy Active Living; Fairness in Work and Later Life; Material Well-Being; and Support and Care. An overall measure of subjective well-being is also included to provide a general picture of older people's quality of life. Assessments of data trends since the 2005 baseline are that 12 indicators are moving in the right direction; there is a broadly constant trend (or no significant movement) on 7 indicators; and a trend cannot be determined for 11 indicators. There are 3 indicators for which the data are moving in the wrong direction: proportion of older people believing that work is available; proportion of older people living in relative low income; and absolute low income. Future progress reports on the trends of these indicators will be published. (KJ/RH). |
