AnnotationOlder gay, lesbian and bisexual (LGB) people comprise approximately 5-7% of the population of older people in the UK, and to date very little has been done to investigate their needs and how service providers can meet those needs. This policy brief focuses on health care issues that may be faced by LGB people in the UK: heterosexism and discrimination in access health care services; sexual and reproductive health; HIV/AIDS; and mental health and substance abuse. Since little is known about the health outcomes and healthcare needs of older LGB people in the UK, the reader is directed to sources such as Alzheimers LGBT Carers (www.alzheimers.org.uk/Gay_Carers) and PACE (www.pacehealth.org.uk). The stigma and discrimination that is experienced across the lifecourse is likely to have a detrimental effect on health in later life; however, there is no research evidence documenting this. (RH).
