AnnotationThis is the first annual report of Professor Yvonne Doyle and Professor John Newton,. the two South East England regional directors of public health. The function of the annual report of the director of public health (DPH) in England is well established, and local annual reports have been produced by DPHs since 1988. The modern annual report is a public statement from the DPH setting out their professional view of the health of the local population. It often serves as a review of the progress being made in improving public health, but is often also a call for further action in areas that are of concern. It is a significant tool for public health advocacy. It provides a progress report and data compendium on the six health strategy themes: health inequalities; the South east as a sustainable region; safer communities; employment and health; children and young people; and later life. Appendices comprise health profile tables for NHS South Central, NHS South east Coast, and of the English regions; also, evidence base sources used for the South East England Health Strategy. (RH)
