| Annotation | The use of evidence to inform policy within a UK public sector body (the former Disability Rights Commission, or DRC) is explored. The author examines the way policy makers define the kind of evidence they need, how they go about getting it, and what they do with it once they have got it. He also considers the role of specialist research managers within that process, and the differences and relationships between research and other evidence. The article highlights the need for clear planning with regard to the skills needed to ensure the gathering of relevant and high-quality evidence, and for an interactive role in which specialist researchers can make a more substantial contribution to policy development.
