Annotation | This is the first annual report of Professor Yvonne Doyle and Professor John Newton,. the two South East England regional directors of public health. The function of the annual report of the director of public health (DPH) in England is well established, and local annual reports have been produced by DPHs since 1988. The modern annual report is a public statement from the DPH setting out their professional view of the health of the local population. It often serves as a review of the progress being made in improving public health, but is often also a call for further action in areas that are of concern. It is a significant tool for public health advocacy. This chapter explains the South East England Health Strategy on later life, which aims to improve the healthy life expectancy of older people and reduce inequalities in health by adding years to life and dignity in care. There are five key objectives to this part of the Strategy: promote active citizenship; promote material well-being; develop active ageing programmes; develop joint commissioning frameworks; implement dignity in care standards in health and social care services.
