Annotation | At her explicit request, euthanasia allowed a 55 year old woman in the Netherlands with end stage chronic obstructive pulmonary disease to end her life. The authors outline the course of events leading to this. In the Netherlands, euthanasia is defined as termination of life by a medical practitioner at the explicit request of the patient. However, euthanasia is legal only in a patient who is suffering unbearably, with no prospect of improvement, and if there is no reasonable alternative. This article discusses these criteria. (RH). |
