Annotation | Participants in the recent Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) consultation 'What are today's social evils?' revealed a strong sense of unease about some of the changes shaping British society. This Viewpoint continues the discussion about modern "social evils" on the theme of "inequality". Ferdinand Mount takes a wide view of the causes and possible cures of injurious inequalities, looking at five overlapping types of inequalities and how to remedy them. These are: political equality (including civic equality and equality before the law); equality of outcome or result (meaning equality of income and wealth); equality of opportunity (equality of access or life chances); equality of treatment; and equality of membership in society.
