AnnotationAnorexia nervosa and bulimia are often thought of as teenage afflictions. However, in Eating Disorders Awareness Week, this article reports that professionals often miss the symptoms in older people, such as consistent patterns of low appetite, a body mass index (BMI) going below 18, and missed or skipped meals. The difficulty arises where symptoms of eating disorders are similar to to signs of ageing. Eating disorder specialists and organisations such as Beat (the UK charity for people with eating disorders) and the Royal College of Psychiatrists' Faculty of Old Age Psychiatry comment on the problem.
