Annotation | The Government welcomes the review by Dame Carol Black, the National Director for Health and Work ('Working for a healthier tomorrow', March 2008). The Government wants to "create a society where the positive links between work and health are recognised by all, where everyone aspires to a healthy and fulfilling working life, and where health conditions and disabilities are not a bar to enjoying the benefits of work". This response is built around three "aspirations". The first, creating new perspectives on health and work, suggests: an electronic "fit" note; a national education programme for GPs; health, work and well-being co-ordinators; and a National Centre for Working-Age Health and Well-being. Second, improving work and workplaces, includes these initiatives: further development of NHS Plus; a business healthcheck tool; a national strategy for mental health and employment; and an occupational health helpline for smaller businesses. Third, on supporting people to work, a range of early intervention services will be piloted in 2009 and run until at least 2011, including "Fit for Work", and having employment advisers within the Improving Access to Psychological Therapies (IAPT) programme and in GP surgeries. The response includes an equality impact assessment, and timetables for actions proposed, also how these might be measured. (RH) |
