Annotation | The traditional roles of general practitioners (GPs) and pharmacists in the UK are changing. Among recent trends are the encouragement of pharmacies to promote healthy living, while still maintaining their role of dispensing medicines. This Round table report begins with an article by Joy Persaud, who takes the patient's perspective and considers whether "choice" will help or hinder patients in receiving the healthcare they want, irrespective of whether this is provided by GP practices or hospital outpatients departments. The round table discussion, sponsored jointly by Pfizer and the New Statesman, considered how we can balance the need for a system that is simple and easy to understand, with the need to be flexible enough to deal with the needs of all patients.
