AnnotationPersonal food choices are influenced by a variety of individual and sociocultural determinants. Familial and broader environmental factors all play an important role in shaping dietary patterns. In youth, foods are often chosen on the basis of sensory cues, but in older age, the cognitive factors are more prominent; we learn to choose food through life experiences. Older adults nowadays aim to live longer and be healthier, hoping for a better quality of life than that of previous generations; they are more health conscious and exposed to a much wider variety of foods. For the purpose of this special issue of Journal of Nutrition for the Elderly, the first article provides an overview of factors contributing to diversity within the population group, and the need for a variety of food and nutrition services to support nutritional well being. The remaining eleven articles are organised into four parts: sensory and perceptual influences on food intake; nutritional recommendations, nutrient supplements and advertising concerns; disease conditions and energy/nutrient adequacy; and intervention services to maintain nutritional status and independence.
