AnnotationThe arrival at care homes of workers whose first language was not English has prompted the Newcastle Challenging Behaviour Service to ask community and care home staff about their experiences of the effects of these workforce changes on communication. The authors report on the nature and extent of problems identified in their survey; examples include misunderstandings, interpersonal problems, challenging behaviours. and residents' needs not met. The need for training and qualifications for staff intending to work in the care system, with a focus on verbal and written language skills, is suggested. (RH).
