AnnotationIn the second of two articles on the way "positive psychology" can support and illuminate work with people with dementia, the author considers human virtues and strengths, and the concept of "flow", or "optimal human experience". Martin Seligman, the founder of positive psychology, has identified six virtues that are valued by nearly all cultures and religions: wisdom and knowledge; courage; justice; love and humanity; temperance; and spirituality and transcendence. Seligman defines strength as a "route to virtues". This article discusses the implications of these ideas for work with people who have dementia. (RH).
