AnnotationFalls are the commonest safety incident in hospital. STRATIFY is a prediction tool developed for use for hospital inpatients, using a 0-5 score to predict patients who will fall. It has been widely used as part of hospital falls prevention plans, but it is not clear how good its operational utility is in a variety of settings. STRATIFY has been subjected to the most independent validation studies and compares well with other tools on speed, adherence and reliability. A search identified 41 possible papers, eight of which were eligible for inclusion in a systematic review and four for inclusion in a meta-analysis; nine high-quality independent validation cohorts were identified. Although high values were reported for specificity and negative predictive value (NPV), sensitivity and positive predictor values were generally too low to make the use of such a tool (or similar ones) operationally useful in falls prevention in hospital.
