Annotation | The MDS-RAI (Minimum Data Set Resident Assessment Instrument for long-term care facilities) is designed to provide a comprehensive standard assessment of residents' needs for use in nursing and residential homes. This action research project explored how care home staff and management could raise care provision standards through embedding its use in daily practice. These findings outline how the MDS/RAI has been used in reporting and assessment, based on a study in three care homes run by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation Housing Trust. The full report (same title) by Iain Carpenter and Laura Stosz of the Centre for Health Services Studies at the University of Kent, is published by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation (JRF) and may be downloaded from its website (www.jrf.org.uk).
