AnnotationHidden carers are those who choose to remain independent of formal services, and are thus very often unknown to the wider care support system. This book draws on the experiences of 26 such carers in Scotland - all caring for at least 20 hours a week - who were each interviewed on three occasions over a 2-year period. The author explains the policy context for carers, notably the Community Care and Health (Scotland) Act 2002; the support services available to carers; how hidden carers cope with caregiving; how carers become clients and the transition to hidden and unsupported caregiving to visible and supported caregiving; and models of caring and caregiving. The book therefore asks why some carers provide high levels of care without support from service providers, and what factors lead to their acceptance of support. (RH).
