Annotation | Direct payments are cash payments made in lieu of social service provision to individuals who have been assessed as needing services. Ten years after the implementation in 1997 of the Community Care (Direct Payments) Act 1996 in Scotland, this book provides an overview of the key issues, including the experiences of two local authorities. Also considered are: the role of support organisations; the marketisation of care in Scotland; the views and experiences of direct payment users; and the future of direct payments in Scotland. Contributions are based on an Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) study which was set up to examine differences in direct payment policies, implementation strategies and practices in Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland.
