AnnotationThis study assessed whether three commonly-used self-rated health (SRH) items (global, age-comparative and self-comparative) are equivalent measures of health perceptions for older adults. Regression analyses were used to simultaneously contrast the associations between physical, psychological and social factors relating to health for the three SRH items in a large population-based sample (N=2034) of older people aged 65+ from the Australian Longitudinal Study of Ageing (ALSA). Health perceptions were more positive from the age-comparative measure, particularly for the oldest old. Different patterns of associations between health factors and SRH measures were found. These results show that the three SRH items are not equivalent measure s of health and cannot be used interchangeably. The reference point of the SRH item has a considerable influence on older people's health perceptions as it encapsulates unique health information. (RH).
