AnnotationThe extent of variation in the detection of dementia in primary care across Europe and the potential for the development of European guidelines was explored by 23 experts from different disciplines and from 8 European countries meeting in two groups. Three key themes were identified for consideration in harmonising European approaches to the diagnosis of dementia in primary care: a focus on timely diagnosis; the need for the development and implementation of guidelines; and the identification of appropriate referral pathways and diagnostic strategies including multiprofessional collaboration. There was consensus that national variations can be reduced and timely diagnosis enhanced by combining simple tests using a systematic stepwise case-finding strategy, in conjunction with a strong infrastructure of multidisciplinary collaboration. The project was funded as DIADEM (Diagnosing Dementia Group) by the European Union (EU) Quality of Life and Management and Living Resources Program (Key action 6.1: Age-related illnesses and health problems).
