AnnotationEngland has the highest health inequalities in Europe, and income inequality is the major cause. Only reform of the welfare state can achieve a fairer distribution of well-being. The author comments on differences of emphasis between the government's commitment to reducing health inequalities and the fact that the class gap in life expectancy has increased in the last 10 years. She outlines findings of a study by her institution (the Wolfson Research Institute, University of Durham) on income-related inequalities in limiting long-term illness. (RH).
