Annotation | Area-based inequalities in mortality is the most commonly used indicator of progress in reducing inequalities. This short article illustrates the continuing inequalities in life expectancy between England, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Scotland, and points to a widening gap in life expectancy at birth between England and Scotland, based on data for 1991-93 and 2004-06.
