Annotation | The Isle of Wight has improved the lives of older people by making home care free for many over 80s so they are not forced to go into residential homes. This article examines what has worked and how the change was implemented with action taken in five key areas to get the scheme up and running: political sign-up, leadership, cost allocation, publicity and discrimination. Further innovation has been introduced for older people with mental health problems, who will now be able to access the same services as under 65s. The council is also developing an integrated dementia service across the island. (KJ/RH). |
