Annotation | In the first of two articles, the author introduces the ideas of "positive psychology" and explains how it can help in work with people with dementia. According to the concept's founder, Martin Seligman, positive psychology can be defined as "a psychology of positive human functioning ... that achieves a scientific understanding and effective interventions to build thriving individuals, families and communities". This article considers the experience of "positive emotion" - examples being joy, interest or gratitude - and whether such ideas could work for people with dementia. Two further focuses and their lessons for dementia care are discussed: experiences of time; and mindfulness, which has its roots in Buddhism forms of meditation. (RH). |
