AnnotationThis paper summarises new research into those factors associated with ageing well among the oldest old, and discusses the findings in the context of current UK policy. The research used data collected as part of a randomised trial of health screening of older people in general practice, the MRC Trial of Assessment and Management of Older People in the Community. Successful ageing used a well-established measure of health-related quality of life (HRQOL), the Short Form-36 Health Survey (SF-36). The analysis looked at mental quality of life (QOL), and found that good mental QOL is not necessarily dependent on good physical QOL and health status. Also found was that social interaction is associated with good mental QOL in the oldest old. (RH).
