Annotation | Using data from the US Health and Retirement Study (HRS) for 2000, this study attempted to look at the role of financial distress in perpetuating depression problems in older women and men. The study also investigates factors associated with the level of depressive symptoms for older women and men aged 65+. As expected, all else being equal, older women reported significantly higher levels of depressive symptoms than did older men. This study concludes that financial distress factors such as higher consumer debt and lower retirement wealth were the significant predictors of depressive symptoms for both older women and men.
