AnnotationMany employers have been reviewing their human resources (HR) practices to look at ways of making better use of their older workers and encouraging them to stay in work. This briefing uses government and independent sources to dispel myths on, and answer questions on the merits of, employing older workers. In view of the changes to age discrimination regulations in October 2007, it suggests that businesses need people to stay in work longer. Among other key messages emerging are that: employers can keep workers longer, and keep them productive; good management is important in retaining loyalty and motivation; and training older workers is a good investment. Extending working lives helps the economy, and reduces the costs of pensions and welfare benefits. (RH).
