AnnotationMany different people operating at different levels within organisations have responsibility for managing volunteers. This research bulletin summarises findings from the authors' "Management matters: a national survey of volunteer management capacity" (available online at www.ivr.org.uk), which focused on the role and position of those with responsibility for managing and organising volunteers within organisations. Volunteer management was rarely the sole focus of someone's job, although a quarter of respondents were in specific volunteer coordinator posts. While many were well-experienced, with more than one-third having managed volunteers for more than 10 years, many were not trained in the role and would find additional professional development in volunteer management useful. Overall, however, managers of volunteers said they felt competent and well-supported in their roles. The study was funded by Capacitybuilders as part of the ChangeUp programme delivered by the Volunteering Hub, and involved telephone interviews with 1382 individuals identified as having responsibility for managing or organising volunteers within their organisations.
