AnnotationWhat is the incidence of domestic elder abuse and neglect in the United States today? In public health and social research, the term 'incidence' means the number of new cases occurring over a specific time period. The NEAIS used a rigorous methodology to collect national incidence data on what has been a largely undocumented phenomenon, and it provides the basis to estimate the incidence of domestic elder abuse and neglect among those aged 60 and over in 1996. The forms of abuse, neglect and exploitation that are defined and reported on are: physical abuse; sexual abuse; emotional or psychological abuse; neglect; abandonment; financial or material exploitation; and self-neglect.
