AnnotationThe National Service Framework for Long Term Conditions (NSF LTC) advocates life-long care for people with long-term neurological conditions (LTNC), and specifically notes the need for specialist neurology, rehabilitation and palliative care services at the end of life. Following on from the report, 'Focus on neurology: addressing palliative care for people with neurological conditions', this survey develops this work further. The Neurological Conditions Policy Group of NCPC undertook the survey neurology nurses in partnership with the RCN Neuroscience Forum, to assess current involvement with, and perceptions of, palliative care services for people with long-term neurological conditions (LTNC). Of 429 questionnaires sent, 90 were returned (21%) and 88 analysed. Findings are presented regarding work settings, criteria for and guidelines on referrals, the value of a palliative care pathway for those with LTNC, training needs, and using tools and pathways to facilitate palliative and end of life care. Recommendations are made on these issues, also on opportunities for joint working. (RH).
