Annotation | This special issue of the British Journal of Social Work comprises ten papers on aspects of the history of social work, not only in the UK but also in Finland, former Yugoslavia, Switzerland and the US. Among its aims is to demonstrate the persistence and complexity of social work as a profession over time within the broader social, cultural, political and institutional context. As an example, the paper by Ian Brodie and colleagues at Glasgow Caledonian University examines key moments in the development of social work in Scotland by contrasting two reports, 'Social work and the community' (1966) and 'Changing lives' (2006). The book reviews section (pp 805-835) comprises re-evaluations by prominent people in social work of works that have influenced their professional career and thinking, and which they consider important in the development of social work.
