Annotation | Direct costs of mental health in England are estimated at some £22.5 billion a year. This review aims to quantify current needs for, and costs of, mental health services; to estimate service provision and costs (including lost employment) for each group of conditions; and to model interventions to assess the impact of costs. The report describes the general methodology and likely demographic change in England to 2026. It presents findings on prevalence and costs for depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenic disorders, bipolar disorder, eating disorders, personality disorders and dementia. The report calls for future costs to be met; more evidence-based interventions; better systems for early detection and treatment of dementia; and further research into the cost-effectiveness of interventions including mental health promotion and prevention. The authors hope to encourage informed debate about the future nature of mental health support. The main lesson is that without the right level and type of investment, we will all pay the price of wasted lives and resources. (RH). |
