AnnotationFarming is the main economic focus of the rural area around the city of Arong in Inner Mongolia. Of its population, around 10% or 32000 are elders, of whom some 11600 are "stay behind" elders who have been left behind in villages to take care of household and childcare responsibilities caused by the massive flow of labour into urban areas. The author reports on a survey by questionnaire and interviews carried out in July-August 2007 to learn about the lives of these older people who continue to work the farms when their offspring leave in search of jobs. This article presents results regarding their education levels, economic conditions, family support, social aid, health, living conditions, and daily activities. (RH).
