Annotation | The ageing industry is an industry which provides care and support services to older people in order to meet their special needs. Compared to the traditional mode of care for older people, it has four characteristics: socialisation, commercialisation, industrialisation and specialisation. This article provides an introduction to the development of the ageing industry in China, the urgency for its development, the focus of the industry, and some observations for developing this industry. The industry in China includes household management services; healthcare and nursing; recreation, sport and exercise; education; tourism; and legal consultation for older people. Suggestions for promoting ageing in place point to six key points to develop the ageing industry in China: develop social welfare; develop institutions for elder care; develop services for ageing in place; promote elder care, particularly end-of-life care; promote market products for older people; and improve the quality of caregivers.
