Annotation | Elder abuse is a significant problem for vulnerable older people. Estimates of prevalence vary, and there is limited high quality research in this field. However, it is accepted that there is still significant underreporting in the UK in 2007. All health and social care workers have a key role in the prevention and identification of abuse, and there is significant legislation in this field. Geriatricians have a pivotal role in both hospital and community settings with regard to elder abuse. Targeted education and training is required. Increasing media and public awareness mean this important topic should be high on everyone's agenda. (KJ/RH). |
