AnnotationThis research bulletin is one of a series published by the Institute for Volunteering Research to explore and disseminate aspects of 'Helping out: a national survey of volunteering and charitable giving' (2007). The part of the survey reported here provides data on who volunteers and why, and helps understand their reasons for volunteering. It offers evidence to underpin discussion and proposals on ways volunteering can be increased and enhanced. Among 2156 people in the main sample, 59% had taken part in formal volunteering in the previous 12 months. Results are outlined concerning reasons for volunteering or not; volunteers' views of how their volunteering is organised; how volunteers are recruited; who volunteers more; and the main areas of volunteering.
