AnnotationThe consultation with the general practitioner (GP) is the bedrock of effective primary care, and patient preferences concerning consultations are crucial. This Executive summary outlines the methods and findings of a discrete choice experiment conducted by the National Primary Care Research and Development Centre (NPCRDC) and based on a postal questionnaire sent to 1193 patients in Greater Manchester. In order to allow an estimate of the value placed on different aspects of the consultation, cost (or "willingness to pay") was included. The results are consistent with two similar, recent experiments which indicate that although access is important, more emphasis needs to be given to the quality and continuity of care (i.e. seeing a GP who knows the patient well).
