Annotation | Robert Butler's introduction expresses a hope that the baby boomer generation will have a transforming effect in countering age discrimination. This document starts with "report cards" on seven major categories in which age discrimination is evident in the US. It provides an overview of aspects of ageism, and how ageism has been created and perpetuated in culture, society, the media and marketing. Personal and institutional ageism - elder abuse, and ageism in health care, the workplace and emergency services - is considered. The costs of ageism - for example settlements made under the Age Discrimination and Employment Act (ADEA) - are assessed. The document concludes with a call for further research and an agenda for action that will raise the status of ageism to the level of human and civil rights. An appendix provides a list of dates since 1964 in efforts to combat ageism in America. (RH). |
