Annotation | Through use of in-depth interviews, this study examines communication by 25 older women (aged 72-99) about their transition to assisted living and the personal sense of self. A combination of communication and ageing theory and socio-historical factors assist in understanding the communication older women use to describe themselves within the context of life events before and after becoming an assisted living resident. Findings reveal that a decrease in long-standing, traditionally female household tasks brought about by the transition to assisted living is a major factor leading to the inability to communicate the sense of self. Inability to adjust and accepting the downsizing of feminine sphere activities leads to several mental, physical and social implications. (RH). |
