AnnotationDevelopment in South Korea has brought economic affluence and rapid social change to a large share of its population. However, social change is having a profound effect on the country's older population as the government struggles to adjudicate any number of competing priorities and as the daily life of its people becomes further removed from long-standing traditions. As customs are faced with adapting to a burgeoning market economy, older people are challenged by an uncertainty not previously known. Sustaining South Korea's remarkable economic profile demands one set of priorities. This article considers a number of the social and social-psychological consequences likely to envelop South Korea's ageing population in the coming decades. Seen from the standpoint of rapid modernisation in the face of global economic relationships, the social challenges may be daunting but by no means insurmountable. It is certain, though, that these factors will profoundly influence the way the life course unfolds. In considering the future needs of older citizens, this article presents suggestions for a research agenda. The future is ripe with possibilities; and social gerontologists working in Korea and across Asia have ample opportunity to help pave the way to a brighter tomorrow. (RH).
