AnnotationThis volume is focused on problems that are significant for older individuals in institutionalised settings. As of 1999, 43 of every 1000 US Medicare enrollees (aged 65+) resided in nursing homes, and 183 of every 1000 enrollees aged 85+ were institutionalised. It has been projected that 85% of these individuals have evidence for nutritional deficiency. Treatment of nutritional problems is considered challenging due to limited numbers of care staff, multiple co-morbidities, and the inherent problems that led to the development of the nutritional deficiency. The seven articles in this issue of Journal of Nutrition for the Elderly aim to update the reader as to how to approach these challenges. They begin with a broad overview of weight loss in the person; and continue with consideration of oral health, dysphagia, pressure ulcers and micronutrient deficiencies, vitamin D and lutein. All of these conditions and factors can contribute to malnutrition of older people in institutional settings. (KJ/RH).
