AnnotationThis volume is about people who have dementia and the relationship between them and the outdoor environment and nature. This collection of eight articles is a contribution to the task of expanding the knowledge base for the design of outdoor environments for people with Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other kinds of dementia. However, whilst the outdoors is considered to be an essential component in intervention efforts in dementia care, there is a complementary task to set limits on what are believed to be achievable goals in caring for this population group. Empirical studies and direct observations constitute the foundation on which the articles are based, the focus being on therapeutic gardens and the design of outdoor spaces. A report by the US Alzheimer's Association in March 2007 states that some 5 million Americans currently have dementia and that by 2030 this will rise to 7.7 million, with a long-range forecast of 16 million by 2050. It is seen as essential that this growing population group should not be denied the "pleasurable sensory experiences most of us enjoy every day", such as sitting outside on a park bench in the sunshine. Part II of Outdoor Environments for People with Dementia is published as the next issue of the Journal (volume 21, numbers 3/4). (KJ/RH).
