AnnotationThe National Director for Health and Work, Dame Carol Black, received more than 260 written responses to her call for evidence for this review; six discussion events were also held. This summary includes excerpts from response and how these have informed the report's recommendations. Among the eight questions asked was: How can we keep working age people healthy and how can the workplace be used to promote health? More importantly, how does the age of the person affect the support that is needed? While suggestions are made concerning the specific needs of older and younger workers, the main view was that age was not a significant factor: individual needs were more important. TAEN - The Age and Employment Network - was among respondents who suggested the Finnish "Work Ability" model, whereby each individual's "work ability index" leads to adjustments and interventions being made accordingly. Other questions concerned mental health problems, occupational health provision, issues on the impact of poverty and social inclusion, and the costs of working age ill health to business. Absence from work through sickness and encouraging action to improve employee health are also considered. (RH).
