AnnotationThe National Director for Health and Work, Dame Carol Black, calls for urgent and comprehensive reform, and proposes radical changes to work-related health services making them available to all. While recognising that work is good for most people's long-term health, this review found that ill health is costing the country £100 billion a year - enough to run the entire NHS. We are living longer, but this is not being accompanied by a similar improvement in self-reported health status. The workplace has a key role in promoting health and well being, and there is a need for changes in perceptions of fitness for work and in attitudes to physical and mental ill health and disability. A new Fit for Work service is proposed, to prevent short-term sickness absence from becoming long-term absence, and for helping workless people who have developed undiagnosed or unsupported health conditions. Developing professional expertise for working age health is required - an integrated approach that includes occupational health and vocational rehabilitation in mainstream healthcare. Government, healthcare professionals, employers, trade unions and all with an interest in the health of the working age population should adopt the approaches recommended in this review. (RH).
