AnnotationThe Department of Health (DoH) and the Gatsby Charitable Foundation have funded this three-year programme based at the King's Fund, which concerns how support to carers has improved during implementation of the NHS and Community Care Act 1990, and the subsequent Carers (Recognition and Services) Act 1995. The programme has three strands: a short intensive programme for areas to "Take Stock and Take Action", longer term demonstration programmes, and a Carers Impact Network to disseminate and exchange information and good practice. This is a checklist for primary care teams to meet the eight key needs of carers and to provide a quality service; it is an extract from the fuller King's Fund report "Taking action to support carers" (Banks and Cheeseman, 1999). Various other publications from the King's Fund are also available which disseminate the programme's findings. (KJ/RH).
