Annotation | The relationship between seven personality disorders listed in the 'Diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders' 4th ed (DSM-IV) and coronary heart disease (CHD) was evaluated in a nationally representative sample of American older people. The authors analysed data on 10573 people aged 60+ from the National Epidemiologic Survey on Alcohol and Related Conditions (NESARC). 13.3% of older people reported a diagnosis of CHD confirmed by a health professional. Age, hypertension, nicotine dependence, any drug use disorder, and any mood disorder increased the odds of having CHD. Female gender and social drinking decreased the odds of having CHD. Controlling for these variables, it was found that avoidant, schizoid and obsessive-compulsive personality disorders increased the odds of having CHD. Personality disorders may increase the risk of CHD in older people. Putative mechanisms and directions for future research are proposed. (RH). |
