Annotation | This short research report presents facts and figures about the population group of older adults in a village, Lukou, in the northern part of Jiangsu province in the Xuzhou region of China, and the problems faced by the village. With a population of 2700, Lukou is considered typical of the area where, since the mid-1990s, people from almost every family have left to seek work outside of the village. The remaining villagers, who now consist mainly of older women and children, are solely dependent upon those that have left to support them financially. Community Alliance went to Lukou for a week in 2007 to investigate the situation. A questionnaire was completed during interviews with some of the remaining 575 elders of the village, where 63.46% of them are "stay-behind" adults. The report outlines the general living conditions, education, family support and healthcare available to this population group, many of whom were unaware of the availability of help from the social welfare system. One such scheme, known as "The five guarantees", was created to help elders with no offspring with some financial support in exchange for returning their lands to the village. This report highlights the need to further support such village population groups. (KJ/RH). |
