Annotation | This editorial notes that the literature regarding guns and dementia is limited: the focus tends to be on access to firearms of people with psychiatric illness. Nonetheless, it outlines firearms legislation and the identification of relevant medical or psychiatric conditions in the UK, the Republic of Ireland, Canada, and Queensland, Australia. It notes findings of studies on risks of gun ownership and firearm related injuries. A suggested approach to the clinical assessment of people with cognitive impairment seeking access to firearms is offered as a decision tree, along with some clinical guidelines. (RH). |
