Annotation | Rising infection rates with pathogens such as Clostridium difficile have seen UK hospitals undergo a 'deep clean', to make sure wards do not harbour diseases. Age-related changes in gut physiology and microflora are explained, as well as the changing immune system, both of which make the older person more susceptible to infections which require treatment.
