AnnotationChanges in government priorities in funding adult and community learning led to the Elders Council of Newcastle's Learning and Culture Group to commission research on the wider benefits of learning, what was gained from learning activity, and what were considered to be barriers in engaging in learning. This paper reports on a literature search (undertaken by Olaojo Aiyegbayo, Sunderland University), responses to a questionnaire sent to members of the Group, and a discussion/focus group. Among main topics discussed are what constitutes the ideal learning opportunity, and possibilities for a "buddying" scheme. Recommendations include considering alternative forms of learning provision as well as urging adequate funding for non-accredited learning activities. (RH).
